The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

Watershed Events In 2016

In this post, I use the noun “watershed” as an adjective to describe events that are unfolding at the start of this October, 2016. The noun watershed means that events are occurring which mark an important historical change of course. In this moment, several things are occurring which will change history.  Unfortunately, as the saying goes, there’s the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Here’s my take on the current changes starting with the ugly.

The Ugly

The ugly is the presidential race between candidates Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. That event is actually a multitude of ugly events and is still ongoing. So far, this race has seen:

  • showtimecircusUnprecedented use of social media, typically to the detriment of everybody’s sanity.
  • Unprecedented racism and prejudice; especially against American Hispanics, Muslims, veterans, women, and generally everyone in politics or in a position of power.
  • Splintering support within the major parties; both Republicans and Democrats.
  • The polarization of Americans to the point of fanaticism, while sensationalizing the ignorance of participants in this election.
  • Attack on media and polls, with manipulation of the media internally to the point of fanaticism.
  • Outright denial of established and well documented truths or facts.
  • Documented lies, twisting of words, statements of pure fallacy, and calling for violence and/or injustice towards even the most respected participants.
  • Worst of all, attacks on the democratic process itself, including blatant disregard for the US Constitution by US’s own politicians and voter’s rights.

Of course the list could go on and on.  To top off all these moments in this race, I predicted that the Presidential debates will be the showcase of the ugly.  I never predicted that it will get this ugly.  The debates is a testament to the circus that is the 2016 Presidential Election.

The Bad

The bad can be found in the regular news.  With the recent string of seemingly senseless killing of citizens, by police without provocation and/or cause but based on racial stereotypes, is bad but is also something happening since days of slavery.  The only change now is that such events are being reported widely, enabled through the use of social media paired with smartphones & cameras.

However, I don’t like to dwell on the bad, and especially the ugly.  Being Canadian, I think Canada has raised the bar on such issues and has made real progress in removing them.  Instead, I want to focus on the good and make note of the fact that this good is coming from the United States.  I just hope the bad & the ugly does not impact or has little impact on the good.

What Is The Good?

It’s hard to recognize with all the above flotsam obscuring but I think there’s hope.  There several points of good recently, and writing them here would not do them justice.  I’ll be posting some of those topics in the coming while…  In the meantime, stay optimistic.
